Vintage Venetian plague doctor paper mache mask from Italy.
Worn by doctors in the 17th century while treating the plaque and based on belief that disease was spread by foul odors (miasma), the mask was part of a larger, full-body suit (including a wax-coated gown) that, while designed on incorrect theories of infection, actually offered some limited protection. The beak was filled with substances like dried lavender, thyme, or camphor to counteract the smell of decay.
