Klimt was part of the European Art Nouveau secession movement. Paintings of philosophy, medicine, and jurisprudence provoked an outburst of indignation on the part of university of Vienna faculty and a passionate public dispute of their artistic merits ensued.
Klimt’s work is the symbolic representation of the dominating forces in human life. Love, ecstasy, motherhood, the stages of life, death are represented by female figures who suggest the rhythm of life itself. The line always contains a deeper meaning.
