Summer quilts were used in the warmer weather to keep the chill off at night. They're missing the middle layer of cotton or wool batting. This beautiful quilt dates from 1880-1920. It's made in the Pineapple log cabin pattern, a very intricate one to make. There are calicos and silk patterns that I've not seen before on a quilt. All colors are derived from plants. The backing is silk.
While this quilt is in amazing condition for its age, in my opinion, it is a little too fragile for daily use. This is definitely a candidate for a display, as well as being folded at the end of a guest bed, perhaps. The condition is good. The backing because it's silk has degraded in parts. As well as some of the silk strips in the front. There is minor age staining, but no rust and no holes.
it's rare to find a quilt of this age and condition and I was happy to have it in my collection albeit for a short period of time
